Yoga brings incredible healing to the mind, body, and soul. There are so many beautiful facets to the study of yoga that I am still learning. It is truly a journey of the self. It also aides many ailments and all kinds of struggles, both physical and emotional – including fertility.
Fertility is not something that comes easily to many. There are over a million couples that are currently fighting their way to conceiving and bringing their baby into this world. As a loss mom myself, my heart is with every parent out there that is feeling the devastating effects of infertility or pregnancy loss. The many doctors that specialize in this field are truly heroes in their own right, but as a Maternity Health Specialist – I know very well that it takes a tribe of us to help parents achieve their parenting wishes.
Yoga for fertility? That may be new to you or perhaps you have heard of it before, but regardless, let’s go over the reasons why this may enhance your chances of a successful pregnancy. So, listen up hopeful mamas-to-be and take a deep breath.
Before I give a general overview and even throw in a few postures to try at home, I will start with this. Believe. Believing that your body is capable of bringing life into this world is the very first step before anything else you do, even before you step foot into a fertility specialist’s office. Our minds are so powerful, that if you believe the opposite, it may make your desired outcome harder to reach. Belief turns on our conscious thoughts towards our own selves. The more you believe in yourself and the capabilities that your body holds, no matter how hard this journey has been, it will automatically make you in tune in to what your body needs during preconception, pregnancy, and even birth!
The more a woman listens to and reads the signs that her body is showing her, the more she will understand her journey and the more she will be able to embrace that journey.
Now onto fertility yoga. Conceive. Let’s jump into the benefits of yoga for fertility, now that you believe it all to be true. Okay, maybe that part may take a little longer to achieve, but that is alright – one step at a time.
Many of you may already know the general benefits that yoga brings such as increased flexibility and strength, improved balance, maintaining healthy joints and circulation, regulating the endocrine system and reducing inflammation, improved sleep and the list goes on and on. But how does fertility yoga differentiate from these general benefits?
- Increases blood flow to the pelvic region
- Stimulates reproductive system by directly focusing on the uterus and ovaries
- Supports and improves your endocrine system (all of your hormones love this help!)
- Reduces stress (prolonged stress plus pregnancy equals NO!)
- Helps regulate your monthly cycle
- Pulls you out of negative thinking
- Uses meditation and visualization to optimize conception (don’t ever underestimate the power of the mind!)
- Balances yin/yang energy (masculine and feminine energy)
- Strengthens the life-force energy in your body – helping you to feel like a super mom already!
Wait until your next cycle begins. Here are some fertility yoga postures you can try during the first half of your cycle and why they help
- Sacrum circles
Circle your knees in one direction – then the opposite. Sync your breath with each circle.
This movement massages the sacrum, which is where your “reproductive energy” sits. This move stimulates that area and gives you a chance to practice breathwork.
- Pelvic Tilts
Gently, tilt the pelvis to press your lower back to the floor on your exhale and on your inhale, release. Do this about 10 to 15 times.
NOTE: there are other ways to do this exercise that strengthen your core – do not do that way!
This gentle version is used to rock the pelvis – to encourage blood flow and release tension.
- Reclined Cobbler Pose
Slowly allow your knees to open apart from each other (while laying on your back) and bring the soles of your feet together. Rest your hands on your belly. Stay here for 10 to 15 breathes.
This pose relaxes and opens the whole pelvic bowl and allows the organs of the pelvic bowl to release any tension they may be holding. It is also relieving for menstrual cramping. It also stretches out the hips!
Finally! Receive. Allowing yourself to fully submerge into the entire process, loving yourself through it all – helps you to receive your baby with an open heart. The day you give birth is not the first line of communication between you and your little one. Fertility yoga helps you slow down and call in the spirit of your baby, even during preconception.
Pay attention to the changes that may take place around you after you open the lines of communication between you and your baby. Perhaps your dreams become more vivid, filling you with messages and guiding you to different things that may help you. Maybe you’ll see signs while awake: repeated numbers, patterns, names, letters or new doors open for new opportunities. Your baby wants you to not only prepare your body but your mind and heart too!
